Sean has over 42 years of playing and coaching experience at the club, high school, college, & ODP levels. He has developed curriculum models and implemented player developmental programs at the recreational, club, & high school levels. He has led multiple teams to State Championship titles at the club and high school level; developed youth players for the state, regional, and national level ODP teams; prepared, trained, and promoted players to regional, national, and college soccer programs, and is a highly experienced goalkeeper trainer & technical director. Sean has been married to his wife Heather for 23 years and they have two daughters, Haley and Brooklyn who both play soccer with ASA. Coach Sean holds the US Soccer National “C” License & the NSCAA National Diploma.
Merlyn comes to us from Southern California where he had a successful coaching career with numerous teams and clubs including; Pioneer High School, La Mirada Soccer Club, AYSO, Arsenal Soccer Club Southern California, PSG Soccer Club Southern California, FC Man United Southern California, EI Surf now IE Legends, as well as working with kids in the Washington area recreational league. Merlyn grew up playing soccer from a young age in California. Merlyn went on to play High School soccer at Pioneer High School and then college at Cerritos. He also played in the USISL for Inland Empire Panteras and was invited to try out for the LA Galaxy and trained with PUMAS (Mexican Professional Team). He has coached with the Olympic Development Program, evaluated players for the Mexico Women’s National Team in 2010, and currently holds the USSF National “D” License. Merlyn is married and has seven children.
John grew up playing soccer in the St. Louis area when he was 5. He was a candidate for the ODP Mid West team and continues playing soccer today in the GMSA Division I men’s league. John’s coaching career includes teams at St. Louis Busch & Wolfpack, the Dallas Stars, Memphis Futbol Club, Germantown Fury, and Collierville Lobos. Coach John holds the US Soccer National “D” license.
Greg has been coaching with ASA since the inaugural year. Greg grew up in Bartlett playing youth soccer and played competitively for the Rangers FC. Greg also plays and coaches a men’s soccer team for Greater Memphis Soccer Association. Coach Greg holds the US Soccer National “E” license and his State “D” License.
Phil is a native of Leeds, England. He played college soccer at Manchester University (UK) and semi-pro/amateur level adult soccer. He has over 24 years of coaching experience winning multiple titles with St Giles Soccer Club in Greenville, SC., Upstate Girls SC (UGSA), Germantown Fury, and Midsouth FC. Phil worked in the UK for soccer company Umbro from 1983-1990 moving to Greenville, SC to work for Umbro USA from 1991-1999. In 1999 he moved to Memphis to work for Varsity Brands (running the Umbro and Select soccer division). Since 2011 he has worked for the Varsity Cheer business as VP of Customs Compliance and Import Management. Phil is married to his wife Kelly. Their daughter Ashley, a four-year Varsity tennis player at St Benedict now attends the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. Coach Phil holds the US Soccer National “E” license.
Matt Kesler is the Goalkeeper Coach for Union University (NCAA DII) as well as Head Coach of the High School Boys Soccer program at Briarcrest Christian School. Prior to moving back to Memphis, Coach Kesler served as the Director of Goalkeeping for Ohio Elite Soccer Academy, which is a soccer club based in Cincinnati, OH that competes in the ECNL. Kesler has also spent time coaching as a staff head coach and goalkeeper coach with Birmingham United Soccer Association, Northern Kentucky Soccer Association, and Collierville Lobos. Coach Kesler also enjoyed a fruitful playing career as a goalkeeper for Union University. He played all four years, collecting some prestigious awards along the way such as Gulf South Conference Defender of the Week, 2nd Team All-Conference, All-Conference Academic Team, and various other awards. He ranks 3rd all-time in most saves in one season, and he ranks 2nd all-time in career saves. After college, Coach Kesler went on to play in the USL’s Premier Development League for the Cincinnati Dutch Lions, and he went on a month-long trial, for now, MLS club FC Cincinnati. Coach Kesler currently holds his USSF National “D” License, and he is currently working towards his USSF National “C” License. He also holds his United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma and Level 1 GK Diploma. Coach Kesler and his wife, Megan Kesler, have been married for 2 years, and they have an 8-month-old daughter, Maya Grace Kesler. Megan coaches girls basketball at Briarcrest Christian School.
Scott is a current player for the new USL expansion team, Memphis 901 FC. Previously, he played with New York Red Bulls II where he started in four matches and practiced with the first team on numerous occasions. Before signing professionally, Scott played at the University of Connecticut where he played in 70 consecutive matches and kept 31 clean sheets. After Red-Shirting his freshman year, he went on to win the American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship in 2014, was named to the Second Team All-American Freshman Team (2014), Men’s College All-America Jewish Soccer Team (2015 & 2017), AAC All-Tournament Team (2015), AAC Second Team (2017), and won Conference Goalkeeper of the Week 10 times throughout his collegiate career. He graduated in December of 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Marketing. He won multiple academic awards and scholarships including being named a New England Scholar twice, an American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team member five times, and was named to the Business School’s Dean’s List. Scott was also part of the U-14 and U-15 United States National Team from 2008-2010. In addition, Scott has worked with many professional goalkeepers including spending extensive time working with Tim Howard.
Owen is originally from Diriamba, Nicaragua and grew up in Southern California. As a player he was a local standout in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles; he led his high school team (La Serna High) to two CIF semi-final appearances. As a senior, he was Invited to the San Gabriel Valley all-star game. Owen played collegiate soccer at Mt. San Antonio College and San Diego State University. As a professional he played in Nicaragua Primera División for Diriangén F.C and Hermanos Molinas F.C. After playing soccer in Central America, Owen returned to the United state to finish his college degree and played soccer in the United State International Soccer League (USISL) for the Redlands "Inland Empire Panteras". As a coach, Owen has been involved with youth soccer for many years in Southern California under AYSO (Region 66) and recently the Arlington soccer program. Coach Owen holds the US Soccer National “E” license.
Ramon grew up in the Dallas area where he played youth soccer. Ramon has been coaching youth recreational and competitive soccer in the Arlington area since 2008. Coaching was initially a great way to help his children’s teams but soon became a commitment to player development. Coach Ramon has personally seen the impact of player development with his two daughters, both of which play for the Arlington High and Middle Schools and will continue their development with ASA this year. Coach Ramon holds a USSF "E" License.
Jarrod has coached youth soccer in Shelby and Tipton counties for over 11 years. He assisted in the formation of the first competitive youth soccer club in Tipton County. Jarrod is a Vice President in Business Development at Marsh ClearSight and has been married to his wife Katie for 18 years. He has three boys, Cooper, Eli, and Brody who all play for Arlington. Coach Jarrod holds the US Soccer National “E” license and his State “D” License.
Josh is originally from Brentwood, California and is a current player for the new USL expansion team, Memphis 901 FC. Previously, Josh played with the Tulsa Roughnecks FC, where he scored his first professional goal against Tim Howard and the Colorado Rapids in the 2018 exhibition game at Autozone Park. Before signing professionally, Josh was a standout player for the San Jose Earthquakes Academy program then went on to play college at UC Berkeley, CA where he started all 4 years, captained the team his Senior year, and was named All Pac 12 team. Professionally, Josh was drafted by the Chicago Fire in 2018, and played with the Tulsa Roughnecks FC starting 24 of 32 matches and leading the team in “Duels Won”. Josh joins the ASA staff as a Technical Trainer and will be working with players in our Performance Training Sessions.
Grant was a local standout in the Memphis area as a player. He was TN state team member 1993-2000. He was on the ODP 1997-2000 Regional team. Best of Preps finalist 97-2000. A winner in 2000. Adidas TN state player of the year 2000. High school All-American 2000. High school state and National Champions 1999-2000 (Houston high school). State Tournament MVP 2000. Invited to Elite Soccer Program (esp) in 1999. Under 23 National pool in 2001. Played at the University of Memphis 2000-2001. Memphis Cup MVP 2002, while attending CBU 2002. Grant has developed players for the regional and national ODP levels. Coach Grant holds the US Soccer National “E” license.
Greg has been coaching in the Arlington Youth Soccer program for over 10 years. He played competitive soccer in Texas and Memphis. He was a member of the TN State runner up team and a Best of Preps finalist in 1989 for Germantown HighSchool. Greg then went on to play college soccer at Christian Brothers University where he was a standout defender. Greg has also played and coached in the Division I GMSA adult league for many years. Greg has been married to his wife Amy for 19 years and has three children, Maddie, Walker, and Gracie who all play in Arlington and ASA. Coach Greg holds the US Soccer National “E” license and his State “D” License.
Ryan has been coaching in the Arlington Youth Soccer program for 11 years. The last four have been with Arlington Soccer Academy. He played competitive soccer in Plano, TX and Memphis, TN. Ryan played High School soccer for Germantown High School, earning All-Metro honors in 1992. He went on to play college soccer at Christian Brothers University. Ryan has been married to Bethany Paule for 14 years. He has two daughters, both who play for ASA, and a son. Coach Ryan holds the US Soccer National “E” license and his State “D” License.
Louis has over 16 years of experience coaching competitive, recreational and middle school in Memphis and Germantown, including the Germantown Soccer Club and Midsouth FC. He and his wife have two children, both played for the Germantown Soccer Club, Midsouth FC, CBHS, and Saint Agnes. In 2015, he attended a Futsal weekend Clinic presented by Keith Tozer, Head Coach of the US Futsal National Team. He has a 5 year BBA with a concentration in Hospitality and Travel, he was recruited by the Hilton corporate office in 2004. Coach Louis holds a USSF National Youth License and USSF National ‘D’ license.
Nathan has played soccer in the Memphis area from the age of 4 both recreationally and competitively. At the age of 18, Nathan began coaching soccer at the recreational level. After 2 years of coaching recreationally, he was recruited as a coach for Panathinaikos Soccer Schools Memphis Academy and later Bartlett Soccer Club. He and his wife have been married for 9 years and have 4 dogs. Nathan currently holds the US National Soccer “E” license.
